Smerd Group is a family-owned real estate business now in its third generation. Started by Meyer and Merle Berger on Jan. 29, 1945 as an industrial supplies wholesaler called M. Berger Co., the family began acquiring real estate in 1957 with the purchase of the old Frank & Seder warehouse (which was later sold) on the Boulevard of the Allies and the Follansbee Steel warehouse on the South Side eight years later.
Peter Smerd, Meyer and Merle's son-in-law, joined the business in 1985 with a mandate to turn two turn-of-the-century warehouses in the Uptown neighborhood of Pittsburgh into offices. Today, the Forbes Stevenson and Forbes Pride buildings house more than 150,000 square feet of offices and labs. Peter then expanded the business' holdings with warehouse acquisitions in the Strip District and Harmony, Pennsylvania.
Jeremy Smerd joined Smerd Group in 2018, having worked as a journalist in New York City since 2002, most recently as the editor of Crain's New York Business. Together with his father, Jeremy is helping the family business expand its footprint in Pittsburgh with new industrial and office acquisitions.
